김강용(b.1950)은 전북 정읍에서 태어나 홍익대학교 미술대학 서양화과와 동대학원을 졸업했다. '벽돌 화가'로 널리 알려진 그는 우리나라 극사실 회화 그룹을 주도하며 전통적인 회화 재료에서 벗어나 모래와 접착제 등을 활용한 독자적 기법을 50년 넘게 탐구해 왔으며, 2000년대 이후에는 구상과 추상의 경계를 허무는 단계로 나아갔다는 평가를 받는다. 2005년 작업에 전념하기 위해 미국으로 건너간 그는 다채로운 색의 벽돌로 지어진 뉴욕의 건물들에서 영감을 얻어, 이전까지의 모노톤 회벽 단색 작업을 점차 다채로운 멀티 컬러로 확장시켰다. 이를 통해 사실적이면서도 추상적인 새로운 회화의 지평을 열었다는 평가와 함께 미국 및 유럽의 주요 프리미엄 아트페어 시장에서도 주목받았으며, 서울시립미술관, 국립현대미술관, 성곡미술관 등 국내 주요 기관에 작품이 소장되어 있다.

Kim Kang Yong has built a singular artistic world through a distinctive painting technique that renders bricks with extraordinary realism using only sand, pigment, and meticulously controlled shading. The bricks that appear repeatedly across his canvases seem, at first glance, to be actual building materials—yet they are in fact painted images conjured entirely from sand and pigment applied to the canvas surface and shaped by precise gradations of light and shadow. By choosing the brick, an utterly ordinary and familiar object, as his subject, the artist reveals how readily what we take to be reality can be transposed into mere image.

Sand, the material at the heart of his practice, functions as more than a means of expression—it embodies the very gap between "seeing" and "being" that runs through his work. Used since the late 1970s, sand lends a physical texture to the canvas surface and, in combination with shadow, generates a three-dimensional illusion on an otherwise flat plane. Where his early work presented bricks arranged in regular, orderly rows—evoking balance and tension through a minimalist formal language—his more recent pieces show bricks piled or scattered in irregular configurations, expanding the rhythm of repetition. His brick imagery has also grown beyond the two-dimensional canvas into three-dimensional structures such as columns, allowing a flat illusion to extend into and inhabit real space. Through this practice, Kim's hyperrealistic imagery continually destabilizes the boundary between reality and illusion, probing the visual illusions and formal order that painting itself is capable of producing.

Kim Kang Yong (b. 1950) was born in Jeongeup, North Jeolla Province, and studied Western Painting at Hongik University, earning both his B.F.A. and M.F.A. there. Known as "the brick painter," he has led Korea's hyperrealist painting movement, departing from conventional painting materials to develop his signature technique using sand and adhesive over more than fifty years of sustained inquiry into the nature of painting. Since the 2000s, his work has been recognized for advancing toward a stage that dissolves the boundary between figuration and abstraction. In 2005, he relocated to the United States to devote himself fully to his practice; inspired by the multicolored brick buildings of New York, he gradually expanded his palette from the monochromatic gray tones of his earlier work into a richer, multicolor range. This evolution opened a new horizon in painting—at once realistic and abstract—and drew growing attention at leading premium art fairs in the United States and Europe. His work is held in the collections of major institutions including the Seoul Museum of Art, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, and the Sungkok Art Museum.
