CHA Minyoung, with her meticulous and refined ability for detail, has long captured the structural elements and systems of the city in the form of travel bags rendered with striking realism. Her works invite us to contemplate fragments of the urban landscapes she constructs. If an individual’s bag holds part of one’s life, the artist’s bags encompass not only fragments of the world but also the vast universe beyond. Encountering another space within the private realm of a bag encourages viewers to re-examine familiar environments unexpectedly, while simultaneously turning inward to recall their own personal memories and deep nostalgia tied to such spaces.

Having worked with the motif of the bag for many years, Cha has sought to transcend her earlier, fixed modes of expression by expanding her practice to a planetary scale, akin to living cells multiplying through division. The documents, images, and the photographs and videos recording her process often possess their own accidental beauty, yet, like cells that vanish after fulfilling their function, they disappear behind the finished work. Just as cells replicate and divide, Cha manipulates digital images through editing tools and color filters, creating works that ceaselessly move and grow beyond habitual routines. Her “bag cells” embody this restless dynamism. The “indeterminate ambiguity” of these “bag cells” anticipates the ongoing growth and transformation of her practice.


Cha Minyoung(b.1977) studied Printmaking at Hongik University, where she also received her MFA and PhD in Film Studies. She has held solo exhibitions at Pyo Gallery, Pyo Gallery Beijing, Gallery Hyundai, the Taipa Houses–Museum in Macau, the Duolun Museum of Modern Art in Shanghai, and PROJECT2009 ART Dubai, among others. Her work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions at institutions such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), HOMA Museum, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Seoul Museum of Art, Sungkok Art Museum, POSCO Art Museum, Nampo Museum of Art, Seoul National University Museum of Art, UNICEF Hall, Saatchi Gallery (London), HART Hall (Hong Kong), and Christie’s Hong Kong. Cha was selected as a finalist for the Sovereign Asian Art Prize, hosted by the Sovereign Art Foundation in Hong Kong, in both 2016 and 2018. Her works are held in major collections including the MMCA Art Bank, Busan Museum of Contemporary Art, NHN, POSCO Art Museum, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Hongik University Museum of Contemporary Art, NAVER, POSCO, Galerie Baudoin Lebon (France), and David N. Kowitz’s Fairlight Hall (UK). She currently serves as a visiting professor at her alma mater.


차민영은 정교하면서도 세밀한 표현 능력을 기반으로 우리가 삶을 영위하는 도시 구성 요소와 체계들을 여행 가방 속에 사실적으로 담아냄으로써, 우리로 하여금 작가가 구축한 도시의 작은 일면들을 응시하고 사유하도록 만들어 왔다. 한 사람의 가방이 삶의 일부를 담고 있다면, 작가가 만들어낸 가방은 세계의 일부, 그 너머 광활한 우주까지 담아낸다. 가방이라는 사적 공간에 존재하는 또 다른 공간을 들여다본다는 경험은, 관객으로 하여금 예상치 못하게 마주한 익숙한 공간을 다시 바라보게 만들고, 스스로의 내면을 들여보며 해당 공간에 대한 자신의 사적인 기억과 짙은 향수를 떠올리게 만든다.

​오랫동안 가방을 사용해 작업해온 그는 고착화된 기존의 작품에서 탈피하기 위해 생명체가 세포를 분열하여 증식하듯 작업을 행성적 차원으로 확장시켰다. 작품을 위해 모은 자료, 이미지, 과정을 촬영한 사진 및 영상은 우연적으로 아름다운 조형미를 선사하기도 하지만 작업이 끝난 후 소멸하는 세포처럼 완성작 뒤로 사라진다. 세포가 복제하고 분열하듯 디지털 이미지를 변형 툴과 색상 필터를 사용해 편집한 차민영의 작품은 익숙해진 작업 방식과 루틴에서 벗어나기 위해 끊임없이 운동하며 생장을 거듭하는 ‘가방세포’인 것이다. 차민영의 ‘가방세포’가 지닌 “미결정의 모호함”은 그의 작업이 앞으로 어떻게 생장과 변화를 거칠지 기대하게 한다.

차민영(b.1977)은 홍익대학교에서 학사와 석사를 마치고, 영상학 박사 학위를 취득했다. 2010년 영국에서 한국 현대미술을 대표하는 작가로 소개(KOREAN EYE)되며 국제적인 주목을 받기 시작했으며, 2016년과 2018년에는 ‘소버린 아시안 아트 프라이즈(Sovereign Asian Art Prize)’ 파이널리스트 30인에 두 차례 선정되었다. 특히 2016년에는 동북아를 대표하는 작가 14인으로 선출되어 홍콩아트센터의 플래그십 전시《Familiar Otherness》에 참여하는 등 글로벌 미술계에서 입지를 다졌다. 또한 상하이 뒤런 현대미술관, 마카오 타이파 미술관, 표 베이징 갤러리 등에서 대규모 개인전을 개최하였고, 서울시립미술관, 부산현대미술관, 대전시립미술관 등 국내 주요 미술관의 기획전에 다수 참여하였다. 글로벌 브랜드 샘소나이트(Samsonite)의 후원 작가로서 가방을 활용한 콜라보레이션 전시를 선보였으며, 최근에는 아이폰17 및 LG U+와 협업한 개인전 《Touch in the Tech Era》(2025)를 성황리에 마무리하며 활발한 작품 활동을 이어가고 있다.
