WEEDS
SOLO EXHIBITION
APRIL 07⏤MAY 09, 2012
PYO GALLERY LA
PYO Gallery LA is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new works by Los Angeles based artist Yunsun Lee. Lee’s paintings examine the struggle for survival within the framework of the multicultural American experience. Working on a ground of translucent layers, weeds are poetically arranged to illustrate the interplay between native and foreign species. The exhibition dates are April 7 thru May 19, 2012.
A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, May 5, from 6 to 9 pm.
Lee’s solo exhibition, Weeds originates from the artist’s interest in exploring the landscape as a metaphor for social, political and historical relations. The Artists states: “Weeds gain very different identities depending on how we look at them. They can be hated and removed; they can be appreciated or neglected and left alone. The character of weeds resembles every aspect of conflict and survival in human society.”
Beyond the conceptual symbolism, Lee’s beautifully layered surfaces are rendered in rich earth tones that radiate into a luminous field of mystery, and perpetual change. Her weeds depict a meditative quality that can only be experienced as they conjure and reveal the various cycles of life; loss, hope and resilience.
Lee studied painting and drawing at the prestigious Seoul National University’s College of Fine Arts in Korea and received an MFA degree in printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute. Since then, her work has been widely exhibited throughout the United States, Asia and Europe. This will be Lee’s first exhibition with Pyo Gallery LA.
