SOLO EXHIBITION
JANUARY 17⏤MARCH 01, 2009
PYO GALLERY LA
January 06, 2009 PYO GALLERY LA presents The Depth of Shadow featuring award winning Korean sculptor Lee Yong Deok, well known for his keen sense of observation and his way of depicting the beauty of humanity through hollow-relief “deprivations” of modern society.
He alters our visual perceptions with a mold from a solid hodgepodge of mixed media, creating inverted three-dimensional illusions. With the negative space he creates positive essences and the juxtaposition of the two casts shadows of depth to emphasize detail. As we approach the sculpture, instead of facing a typical structure of volume and mass, we face a cavity of negative space that appears as if it’s popping out towards us.
Lee, Yong Deok was born in Korea and studied at Hochschule der Kunste in Berlin. His work has been displayed in exhibitions all over the world and included in major public and private collections; among them, the Shul Museum in Berlin and Silicon Valley’s Four Seasons hotel in the US, granting him international recognition for his exquisite technique.
The Depth of Shadow will be on display exclusively at PYO GALLERY LA from January 17 to March 1.
The opening reception will be January 17 at 6pm. Lee, Yong Deok will also be among the artists featured at the Los Angeles Art Show, January 21-25.
