표갤러리 신관에서는 2008년 3월 28일부터 4월 17일까지 사치에 호리고메의 개인전 "Flow on Air"전을 선보인다.

호리고메의 작품은 선명하게 보이기 보다는 부드러우면서도 안개에 싸인 것 같은 흐릿한 스푸마토 기법을 연상시킨다. 은은한 색의 그라데이션과 원근감이 사라진 변형된 형태의 병들로 이루어진/ 2차원적인 평면회화는/ 파스텔로 이루어지는 기본 스케치와 그 위를 엷은 유화물감을 잔잔한 음영으로 이어가고 말리는 과정을 반복하면서 이루어진다. 중첩된 물감 층에서 나타나는 깊이 있는 색감과 그 맨 아래 층에 희미하게 보이는 건조한 파스텔 색조들은 사물의 본질을 바라보는 작가의 특유한 기법이기도 하다. 어두운 배경 속으로 사라지는 듯 흐릿한 윤곽과 원근법을 배제한 유리병들은 유리 고유의 단단한 성질을 잃어버린 채 주변과 동화되고 있는 듯 하다.

흐릿하게 보이는 유리병들은 부드러운 파스텔 색조로 따뜻하면서도 몽환적인 분위기를 자아낸다. 작가는 그의 작품 속에서 사물의 순수한 본질을 바라보게 하고 섬세하고 여린 또 하나의 자아로서 ‘유리병’이라는 이미지를 표현하고 있다. 또한 그는 현대 산업사회에서 공산품으로 대표되는 유리병을 모티브 삼아 투명하고 깨지기 쉬운 유리병에서 20대를 보내고 있는 작가 자신을 투영해 보이기도 하며 어둠 속에서 사라져가는 유리병에서 순수성을 잃어가는 현대인들의 자화상을 나타내기도 한다. 그의 작품은 마치 유리병 안에서 공명되는 소리가 들리는 것처럼 느껴지며 그 잔향은 캔버스 속에서 은은하게 울려 퍼지고 있다.

호리고메는 일본에서 떠오르는 신진작가로 이미 수상경력이 있을 정도로 두각을 나타내고 있기 때문에 그의 활발한 작품활동이 국내에서도 이루어지길 바란다.


Works of Horigome associate with the sfumato technique which is gentle and looks like wrapped in mist rather than clear. Two-dimensional painting-composed with gradations of dim colors and transformed shape of bottles-painted and dried in tranquil shade with a thin layer of oil color on basic sketch in pastel. Deep color in multi-layered oil color and dry-tone of pastel in bottom layer are techniques the way the artist looks at the nature of objects. The glass bottle-excluded perspective and disappeared dim outline in the darkness-in the painting seems to assimilate to surroundings, losing a solid character of its own.

Dim bottles evoke a phantasmal atmosphere with soft pastel tone. Artists make to see the nature of objects, and express the image of the bottle as artist herself which is delicate and fragile in her painting. Thus, she takes a bottle-represented as industrial products-as a motif, she reflects herself, spending her time in her 20’s, to the bottle which is transparent and fragile, and she represent portrait of modern people who have lost their purity in disappeared bottle into the darkness. As if her works seem to be heard of resonant sound in the bottle and reverberations resound distantly in the canvas.

Horigome is an emerging artist who is being recognized as she has been receiving prizes and awards, and we hope that her works will be more known in Korea through her artistic activities.
