표 갤러리에서는 국제적으로 널리 알려져 있는 조각가 마르타 판(Marta Pan)의 국내 첫 번째 개인전을 개최한다. 헝가리에서 태어나 프랑스에서 작품 활동을 하며 일생을 조각에 전념해 온 마르타 판은 자연과 환경 그리고 인간의 조화를 추구하는 개념을 바탕으로 생명 현상의 근원을 탐구하는 다양한 조각 작품을 선보여왔다.
작가는 자연적 형상에서 받은 영감으로부터 기하학적인 단순함과 균형을 근간으로 한 조형성을 바탕으로 자신만의 독창적인 작품세계를 구축하고 있으며 조각에 철, 돌, 플렉시 글라스, 나무 등 다양한 재료를 사용하여 자연의 본질적 특성과 재료가 가지는 고유한 본질을 조화롭게 결합시켜 나간다. 특히 물을 조각의 받침대로 이용하여 물의 파동에 의해 공간 속에서 조각이 움직일 수 있도록 제작된 떠있는 조각(Floating Sculpture)의 아름다움은 세계적으로 정평이 나있다. 일반적으로 그녀의 작품은 자연이나 공원에 설치되어 물과 바람의 움직임 등 자연과 완벽한 조화를 이루어내며, 최근에는 건축물 및 공공장소를 위한 도시 환경 조각으로도 높이 평가 받고 있다.
작가의 자연을 유추하는 형태학적 작품에서부터 환경 조형물을 제작하기 위해 만들어진 모형, 그리고 자연환경 조각 등으로 다양하게 구성하여 작가의 전반적인 작품 세계를 보여주게 될 본 전시는 다양한 현대미술의 경향 속에서 추상조각의 순수성을 드러내며 조각과 자연환경이 조화된 관계를 창조해내는 마르타 판 고유의 예술적 철학을 살펴볼 수 있는 의미 깊은 전시가 될 것이다.

MARTA PAN(b.1923) was born in Budapest and received her artistic education in Hungary. In 1947, she went to Paris and enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. This was ”a formality” she explained, because, far from wishing to follow an existing style, her intention was to explore the effervescence of a creative atmosphere. MARTA PAN is a prolific artist whose art is in demand throughout the world. Of all her works, the one most visible to the public in France is certainly the ‘’Signe Infini’’ which displays its 25 metres of stainless steel at the intersection of the A6/A46 motorways north of Lyon. Other works are to be found in Dallas, United States and in the garden of the Ligne Blanche in Osaka, the latter consisting of a floating sculpture, a labyrinth sculpture, the White Line and a Signe Infini. There is a floating sculpture in the Hakone Open-Air Museum in Osaka with others in front of the Town Hall in Tokyo and in Sapporo, Kobe, Hakone and Yokohama, all in Japan. Still further specimens are to be found in St Quentin at Yvelines: ‘’ La Ligne, les Escaliers d’eau and les Arcs’’, in the pedestrian precinct at Brest, in Paris at the Champs Elysées and at la Place des Fêtes, in Duisberg, London, Beirut, in Italy, Luxembourg, Taiwan, Korea. global recognition of an unusual talent.
