Whee는 언어로 표현되지 못한 감정과 내면의 진실을 추상 회화로 풀어내는 작업을 해오고 있다. 조소를 전공한 작가는 초기에 자연의 외형을 탐구하던 방식에서 벗어나, 이제는 기억과 감각, 그리고 형상으로 규정할 수 없는 내면의 영역으로 시선을 돌린다. 그녀는 형태를 버리고 해석의 여지를 내려놓음으로써 회화의 본질에 닿고자 하며, 거친 텍스처와 강렬한 색채, 거침없는 제스처를 통해 그 과정을 화폭 위에 펼쳐낸다. 그녀의 작품은 표면적으로는 원초적이고 격렬한 에너지를 내뿜지만, 그 안에는 소리 없이 타오르는 지구의 핵처럼 조용하고 깊은 침묵이 공존한다. 이러한 특징으로 인해 위이의 작품들은 보이는 것을 넘어 보이지 않는 것의 진실을 향해 나아가는, 소리 없는 외침으로서의 회화라는 독자적인 세계를 구축한다.

Whee(b.1984)는 서울 출생으로 서울과 마닐라를 기반으로 활동하고 있다. 2007년 미국 로드아일랜드 스쿨 오브 디자인(Rhode Island School of Design)에서 조소 학사 학위를 취득하고, 2012년 서울대학교 대학원에서 조소 석사 학위를 취득했다. 같은 해 서울대학교 미술관에서 우수 졸업생 전시에 참가하며 본격적인 작가 활동을 시작했다. 2013년 Kunst Dog에서 공모 수상 개인전 《Idolic Bonanza》를 개최하였으며, 이후 마닐라 Leon Gallery, 싱가포르 National Gallery 등 아시아 주요 기관에서의 전시를 통해 국제적인 활동 영역을 넓혀오고 있다. 2024년에는 마닐라 메트로폴리탄 미술관의 단체전 《Wild-Women Abstractionists on Nature》에 참가하였으며, 2025년에는 필리핀 Pintô Art Museum and Arboretum에서 개인전 《Silent Scream》을 개최했다.

Whee’s practice delves into aspects of human experience that cannot be easily expressed through words, using abstract painting to give form to the intangible. Trained as a sculptor, she initially focused on the forms of nature before gradually shifting her attention toward memory, sensation, and other intangible dimensions of experience. Her paintings move away from recognizable forms and predetermined meanings, allowing emotion and sensation to emerge through color, texture, and gesture. Rough surfaces, intense colors, and expressive brushstrokes capture the immediacy of these experiences and translate them into a visual language.
Despite their energetic and sometimes raw appearance, Whee’s paintings are marked by a sense of stillness and restraint. Beneath their physical intensity lies a quiet, enduring force, much like the heat contained within the earth’s core. This interplay between energy and silence is central to her practice. Rather than depicting what is directly visible, Whee seeks to evoke what lies beneath the surface—feelings, memories, and experiences that resist verbal or figurative representation. Through this approach, she develops a distinctive language of abstraction, one that she describes as a “silent scream.”

Whee (b. 1984) was born in Seoul and is currently based in Seoul and Manila. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design in the United States in 2007, and a Master's degree in Sculpture from the Graduate School of Seoul National University in 2012. That same year, she began her career in earnest by participating in an exhibition for outstanding graduates at the Seoul National University Museum of Art. In 2013, she held her award-winning solo exhibition "Idolic Bonanza" at Kunst Dog, and has since expanded her international presence through exhibitions at major institutions across Asia, including Leon Gallery in Manila and the National Gallery Singapore. In 2024, she participated in the group exhibition "Wild-Women Abstractionists on Nature" at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, and in 2025 she held a solo exhibition, "Silent Scream," at the Pintô Art Museum and Arboretum in the Philippines.
